Sharia and Halakha and the Modernization of Religious Law
Open UvA Course
The course offers an introduction to the historical background, development and doctrine of Islamic and Jewish law and their present-day application.
In the combined sharia and halakha lectures, students gain insight in the development of sharia and halakha from revelation to legal system, the contents of these legal systems and their subsequent modernization through codification. Attention will be paid to commonalities and differences between the two religious legal systems.
The course consists of a seven-week lecture series on Islamic law in the Middle East, in which a comparative approach to Jewish law is adopted (where possible).
