Before starting Modern Yiddish Language Acquisition 2 you must have completed the module Modern Yiddish Language Acquisition 1 in November - December 2023.

Upon completion of Modern Yiddish Language Acquisition 2:

  • You will be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • You will be able to describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
  • You will have a wider knowledge of modern Yiddish Language and Literature.
  • During this period there will also be more emphasis on reading skills, while continuing to study the treasures of Yiddish Literature and Culture through texts, folklore, and films. We will frequently have reason to refer to the history and culture of Ashkenazi Jewry in studying the language.
  • At the end of the course will have an A2 (CEFR) command of Modern Yiddish.

  • 13 February - 21 March 2024
  • Tuesday from 11:00-13:00 and Thursday from 11:00-13:00
  • Location: P.C.Hoofthuis room 5.55 on Tuesday and room 1.05 on Thursday
  • Costs: € 210 (€ 189 AUV members)

Important to know

  • The registration deadline for this OUC was 22 January 2024; Registration for this course is no longer possible.
  • Active participation and weekly homework assignments are compulsary.
  • You are expected to have a sufficient level of digital literacy and skills.
  • The language of instruction is English. In case all students have a command of Dutch, Dutch will be used as a second language of instruction.
  • You can only audit an OUC, which means that you may only attend lectures and cannot take part in the examination, or obtain ECTS credits.
  • The location of the lectures may change during the semester. For the current study schedule, please consult the UvA timetable website. 

Study material

The study material will be provided by the lecturer. Before each lesson a PowerPoint with the material of that class will be made available on Canvas. The PowerPoints are based on sources and materials from a variety of Modern Yiddish Language Acquisition books. You are not required to buy any study books at this point.

Usage of Yiddish Dictionaries

Access to a Yiddish dictionary is critical in this course. You will need to consult it on a regular basis. You can acquire a physical dictionary, or you may acquire access to online dictionaries at a special student fare. All the relevant information will be given on Canvas.
